A Young Gun
Naman: Hi Neeraj! I wanted to interview both you and mom to get different opinions on the emergence of a new generation of investors. I know you are super busy filming your movie, so I just have a couple of questions to ask you.
Neeraj: Yeah, sure buddy. I would love to help you out.
I didn't think I would be able to get him so easily. That's a surprise!
Naman. Okay! So here are just some background questions. When did you begin investing and why? Who encouraged you to start?
Neeraj: I actually only began investing less than 5 months ago. I remember watching you and some of my friends follow the stock market and I gradually gained interest. Also, mom and dad encouraged me to try it out when I talked to them about signing up for Robinhood.
It was definitely me. I kept nagging him and he finally decided to listen to me.
Naman: I see. I began trading a long while ago and you watched me make so many trade. Why weren't you interested in stocks for so long?
Neeraj: I think the biggest thing for me was wasting money on each trade. If I wanted to day trade, every transaction would cost me $10. However, Robinhood has revolutionized stock trading. I can make as many trades as I want for no cost. Also, from watching the market and certain trends, I have learned more about how to invest.
He's right! I never really thought about how much money I save from trading freely on Robinhood.
Naman: I'm glad you began trading, so now I have someone to discuss my trades with. Anyways, are you familiar with the rising number in investors in college and high school?
Neeraj: Yes, I am well aware of it. It is so interesting to see that three years ago when I was in high school, none of my friends knew anything about stocks, and now it seems as though, everyone teenager has an understand of it.
Whenever I saw his friends, they never talked about stocks or investments or anything. However, the newer generation of students have showed interest in this hobby.
Naman: Do you know exactly why this is the case? Why is there an increase in the number of young investors.
Neeraj: I guess it is because of advancing technology. I mean with application like Robinhood, you can buy and sell a stock within seconds. People data and news is so accessible now, many students - both in high school and college - have a good understand of which companies are thriving and which ones aren't.
Naman: Yeah, I agree man. I know you are getting late, so here is my last question. What is your take on an increase in teenage traders?
Neeraj: I think it is fantastic. We need to educate students about the market. I have lot of friends who know everything about companies and their statistics, but I also have a lot of friends who don't. And I think that not knowing how the stock market works puts them at the disadvantage financially. It would be great if high schools incorporated a class about stocks and how it plays such a vital role in the U.S. economy.
I think that teaching a course on stocks would be great for students not only in the long run but also in the near future.
Naman: I complete agree with you Neeraj! I think that it would be great to educate student about trading at a young age. I would like to thank you for taking the time and doing this.
Neeraj: Anytime buddy!
