Tanpura
|
Although I do not play the tanpura, a long-necked plucked string instrument used by Indian vocalist, I have a strong connection with it. This instrument only plays three notes - lower Sa, middle Pa, and upper Sa; however, it guides me as I sing across two octaves. This powerful, but largely unknown activity that can
significantly reduce stress levels is listening to the soothing music of the tanpura. This music is therapeutic not only because of its sacred,
meditative nature, but also because of its gentle melodies. I have personally
benefitted from learning and practicing Indian Classical music in conjunction with the tanpura over the past seven years. Incorporating this music, a form of meditation and relaxation, into my daily routine has helped me induce both tranquility and peace.
Unlike basketball, my parents always encouraged me to pursue Indian Classical singing along with other Indian instruments. They saw this as an opportunity to learn about Indian culture, traditions, and religions. Along with learning many auspicious lyrics and melodies, I attended religious classes every weekend. These activities have allowed me to truly understand and appreciate my Indian heritage. Without these values my parents instilled in me at a young age, I wouldn't be able to proudly call myself an Indian. |
